The “Save Wetlands, Save Delhi” Wetlands Inventory is an online, interactive database of all existing wetlands of Delhi as of 2021.
Methodology
The data of wetlands was initially obtained from Government reports and records of different Government agencies. However, this was found to be insufficient since these records listed wetlands that no longer exist and have already been consumed by the rapid pace of urbanisation in Delhi. The location data of many wetlands was found missing in the Government records.
Fresh data of wetland is therefore being collected using a citizen science approach. Citizens of Delhi are requested to share data and information about wetlands near their homes and workplaces using this form. The data so obtained is verified using publicly available Google Maps and Desktop-based Google Earth software. The historic imagery plugin of Google Earth has been helpful and is utilized to determine “existing wetland” from an otherwise temporarily created water body.
Definition of “existing wetland”
The definition of “existing wetland”, for the purpose of this inventory, is any wetland or water body in Delhi which has been inundated with water since the last two decades, i.e. since at least the year 2000.
Wetland Status Categorization
All assessed wetlands are categorized under one of the following 5 categories, which are borrowed from the IUCN categorization system with some modifications. Each category is defined below.
1. Lower Risk (LR): The green cover around the wetland is intact since the last two decades and there is little, if any, construction or land-use land-cover changes in its vicinity.
2. Near Threatened (NT): The green cover around the wetland is intact but there is considerable construction or land-use land-cover changes in its vicinity.
3. Endangered (EN): There is considerable loss of green cover around the wetland and there is considerable construction or land-use land-cover changes in its vicinity.
4. Critically Endangered (CR): The wetland area is no longer inundated with water for most parts of the year.
5. Collapsed (CO): The wetland area has been built upon by a building, commercial or residential area, recreational area like park and is no longer inundated with water.
